Here are five questions worth asking before you choose.

You’ll spend a considerable amount of time onboard, so think about what you want from that time.

Do you prefer a smaller, more intimate ship, or do you want more space, amenities and choices? Think about your stateroom, public areas and how you like to spend your downtime.

And don’t overlook dining. Some cruises rely more heavily on buffets, while others offer a combination of buffet and table service. If food is an important part of travel for you, how and what you eat onboard matters.

2. How Inclusive Do You Want Your River Cruise to Be?

The words all-inclusive can mean different things from one cruise line to another.

Beverages, gratuities, transfers and excursions may be included, or you may pay separately for some of them.
