How to drink Guinness Like a Girl (and a Guy)

Several years ago I went to Ireland. At that time I was introduced to the national drink of Ireland, Guinness. Although some people think the national drink is Jameson’s Whisky. Whatever.

Not being a regular stout drinker, this is the only stout I’ve had, and I am quite happy with it.   

Guinness is quite bitter. If you’ve had it, you know. I learned how to drink Guinness like a girl in Ireland quite a few years ago. And I’m going to share this with you now. This little trick I’m about to tell you has seemingly not made it to our shores. Though, for the life of me, I can’t figure out why. 

Drinking Guinness in pubs in the U.S. I’ve asked for this, and no one knew what I was talking about. At the time, I didn’t realize it had a name. I’ll try this at a pub soon and see what they say. 

What Is It Called?

The drink itself is called a BLACK AND PURPLE or a BLACK AND BLACK, and I’ve seen it called Guinness and Blackcurrant or a PURPLE GUINNESS. That’s just too many names!

How Is it Made?

Whatever you call it, it has the usual Guinness, but first add a few tiny drops of Blackcurrant Liqueur. In the U.S., this liqueur is Crème De Cassis.  It goes in the glass before pouring the Guinness. This is the way I saw it poured, and this is the way I do it.

I’ve seen recipes that call for 1 – 2 ounces of Blackcurrant or one to two Tablespoons. This is not my taste. I think it’s too sweet. Since I want the Guinness’s flavor but not the bitterness, a few drops of Blackcurrant Syrup or Crème de Cassis works just fine for me.

Girls like to drink it this way because it’s sweeter. But guess what, some guys drinking it this way too.

Try it for yourself and see what you think. St. Paddy’s day is coming, and you’ll want to be ready for a proper pint of Guinness. Depending on what is open for business with the Covid restrictions, you might just want to be prepared.
