My very first birthday present from my mother and father was their DNA. This year for my birthday my mother gave me an Ancestry DNA test kit. I can’t wait to receive the results.
It was easy and quick to take the test. Place your saliva in a test tube; it won’t take much, screw the lid on very tightly. There’s a preservative in the lid that releases when it’s tight enough. I had to use a wrench to achieve that, but you might be stronger. Shake it to combine, place it in the provided envelope and seal and enclose in the mailing container. Drop in the mail box and wait.
The family tree on my mother’s side is much fuller than my father’s side. Now I have no one to ask to get the answers I want. The DNA test was my best solution to that problem.
Television shows have helped foster the desire to know more about ourselves. Two shows have been instrumental in helping learn how to go about this research.
The first one is on The Learning Channel; “Who Do You Think You Are?” What I love about WDYTYA is the Guest on the show follows the hints or what I call the bread crumbs. They go to where their ancestors lived and learned about them while in that place! They see the houses, and the farms, and towns and graveyards.
Finding Your Roots on PBS has a different method. The show’s host, educator Robert Louis Gates, Jr., and his team research the guest’s ancestral history for them. Then Mr. Gates presents it to them in a book and tells their story as they turn the pages to see pictures of family members, perhaps for the first time, and learn about their connections. The show ends with them receiving a beautiful, professionally done family tree.
So what about you? Imagine how fun it would be to discover something about an ancestor that blows your socks off! Maybe it’s that one of your hobbies or abilities is the same hobby or ability that an ancestor had too? Maybe they look exactly like you! How would that make you feel?
Let’s go a step further. How amazing would it be to introduce your children to their heritage? It can all start with what you already know and extend to learn what you don’t know. Ancestry.com can open up your world. Did your ancestors come from Croatia, Germany, England, Poland, etc. etc.
Want to have a life changing experience? Take your family on an ancestor hunt for your next vacation. Go to one of the places your ancestors came from and explore their world. Dig deep and have fun!
And that’s where the travel comes in! When it comes to searching out your ancestry, that can be fun for the whole family. Planning a trip to see where you came from, that’s a job for a professional. That’s what I do, and when you’re ready to take that trip, I can design that trip for you.
