Ancestry Travel
Part Two
In part one of this two part series, I told you about how to have your DNA test. Fast forward eight weeks… We’ve sent our DNA test kit back to Ancestrydna.com, and we’ve been waiting for eight long weeks. When the DNA results finally arrive, it’s very exciting. It appears as an innocent email, maybe on a day you’re not expecting it.
The biggest, surprising take away I have from my results is that I’m 31 percent Ireland, Scotland, Wales! With an Irish Great Grandmother, it’s just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.
Here are the steps to take:
Buy a DNA test at Ancestrydna.com. You will receive it in a couple of weeks. When it arrives, follow the instructions and return to Ancestrydna.com.
While you wait, create a free account in ancestry.com or purchase a membership and start building your family tree. The membership will give you more access to the database. Begin with the family members you already know. Each new person, place, marriage, date added will begin to connect with the Ancestry.com database. Soon you will see the green hint leaf that tips you off there are possible matches.
When your test results are available, in about 6 – 8 week, connect the results to your family tree. That will bring on more hints. The more family members who add their results to the database the more information you can find out.
You may know a little, or you may know a lot about your family. But I could almost guarantee you will learn things you didn’t know by working on your family tree. And what you don’t know, can lead you into a new world of discovery. Maybe you’ll find out a great grandparent is from Ireland, as I did, or you’ll learn things that you cannot imagine right now.
With the knowledge of an Ireland connection, I want to go there to discover more about this ancestor. Could I learn why she left, and what her life might have been like in the 1860’s? Understanding the historical background of the country, and the area where she lived will also help.
There are all things that I have yet to learn, but I’m looking forward to digging in to the details. And this is what you can do too. It takes some focused time and attention as you dig through history. I believe that the DNA results helped me break through a barrier that I was unable to surmount before.
Now you know how to get started and why to start digging into your ancestry and your ancestor’s story. One more thing you need is someone to help you design the trip to go to your ancestral home. That’s where I come in because I have a passion for learning and having these experiences also.
Did you know I offer free travel design consultations? As a travel designer, I help people who are interested in learning more about culture and history, whether it’s their ancestral history or world history and bringing it to life in the places where it happened.
