Why Take A Vacation? You’ll Live Longer

Why take a vacation?  You’ll live longer, for one reason! 

It’s official according to a 40 years study by the University of Helsinki. They have figures to prove it. Professor Timo Strandberg, of the University of Helsinki wrote:

“Don’t think having an otherwise healthy lifestyle will compensate for working too hard and not taking holidays. Vacations can be a good way to relieve stress.”

Let’s talk about why people who take a vacation live longer. I think it is because when you plan a vacation for the future, you have something to look forward to. Having the anticipation of fun, delightful, and desirous activities creates good feelings. In fact, I think we tend to eat better and exercise to look good in our vacation wardrobe.

Another Reason Why Take A Vacation

 Vacations open the door to doing different and life enriching pursuits than you do in your daily life. It allows your mind to rest, your body to relax, you get to reconnect with your self and your loved ones. And relaxing comes in all shapes and sizes and varieties, because it’s what it means to you. Relaxing on the beach with a good book. Exploring a foreign city. Biking in Tuscany or Iceland. Sipping on Turkish coffee or wine tasting in the French countryside. It’s all up to you.

Explore new cultures, find a new passion

A couple of years ago, I had a Christmas Market river cruise on the Danube coming up in November, and it was booked in June. I had spent time thinking about it, booking hotels, thinking about what I wanted to do, see, eat and drink. It was only September but I have a good idea of what I was going to pack to stay warm as I walk through the various Christmas Markets. I knew who I wanted to buy Christmas presents for although not specifically what. Best of all I was looking forward to some fun time with my BFF, Bonnie.  

This past year, Covid 19 stopped everyone from traveling overseas.  I had several trips planned and they were all canceled.  Believe me, I know that pain and disappointment of canceling a trip you’ve been anticipating for a while.

Another reason why to take a vacation is to celebrate! 

I had a milestone birthday in January this year.  I was going take a big trip to celebrate around the time of my birthday.  It became apparent that wasn’t going to happen.  When I decided that it didn’t matter when the trip was, I booked my birthday celebration trip on a Christmas Market Cruise for the end of this year. 

Now I have an entire year to look forward to it.  Since  I love European Christmas Markets, what could be more perfect than a river cruise? I’m traveling with a good travel buddy, we choose a suite on the largest ship cruising the Danube, the AmaMagna, and we’re going early and staying for a few nights after the cruise. Thinking about the fun we’ll have gives me so much joy!
