When we were in Venice, from November 1 – 5, 2019 there was no flooding, and that was a blessing. We did see how they were prepared for this to happen often. There were stacks of platforms everywhere, ready to be placed when the water did rise for walking above the water.
Now Venice is on their knees, as we have heard on the news. It’s a tough time for them and my heart goes out to the people we met there. I don’t blame tourists for not wanting to go now and be a part of all that. Homes and piazzas are flooded, as are churches, stores, and more.
But, when this is over, and it will be over, Venice needs the tourists to come even more. Their economy relies on tourism. The shops, artisans, gondoliers, restaurants, hotels, markets all rely on visitors enjoying their little part of the world.
If you were there right now, you wouldn’t see what we saw. How can I describe it to you? Well, instead of using words, here are some pictures of our experience in Venice in the beautiful St. Mark’s Square and Basilica. I hope you enjoy it. Please let me know what you think, and if you have been there, I’d love to hear about it.
