Europe Entry/Exit System – What U.S. Travelers Need to Know

The Europe Entry/Exit System (EES) is now in effect for travelers entering many European countries. If you’re traveling from the United States, you may notice a different process when you go through passport control.

The good news is that there is nothing you need to apply for or complete before your trip. EES is part of the border entry process. Simply follow the directions at passport control when you arrive at your first applicable European border crossing.

The new system replaces traditional passport stamping with an electronic record of when travelers enter and leave. While the process may take a little longer, particularly during busy travel periods, it is designed to make border checks more efficient and help authorities keep an accurate record of how long visitors remain in Europe.

Why Europe Is Using the Entry/Exit System

The Europe Entry/Exit System replaces the traditional passport stamp with a digital record of when non-EU travelers enter and leave participating European countries.

The system records information such as your name, passport details, facial image and fingerprints, along with the date and place you entered or exited. This allows border authorities to more accurately track how long visitors stay and identify travelers who have exceeded the amount of time they are permitted to remain.

What to Expect at the Border

When you enter a country using the EES, your passport information will be recorded electronically. You may also have a facial image taken and fingerprints collected as part of the process.

On later trips, your information may already be in the system, making it possible for border officials to verify your identity against the information previously collected.

You should still keep your passport readily available and allow some extra time for passport control, particularly at busy airports and during peak travel periods.

There is no fee to use the EES or to have your biometric information collected. It is simply part of the border entry and exit process.
