Wintergarden on the Viking Star by Viking Ocean Cruises

In December of 2017 I was privileged to take a tour of the Viking Sky while she was docked in Fort Lauderdale. Viking gave a select group of travel agents the opportunity to view the Sky first hand. We toured the restaurants, public areas, entertainment, spa, fitness center, and the various room categories.

My last article was all about the fun of traveling with the kids and grand kids. But this week is the other side of the coin. Read on to find out what Viking Ocean Cruises has to offer adults only, under 18 need not apply.

Viking Ocean Cruises caters to adult travelers only. This gives Viking Ocean Cruises a unique place in the world of cruising. Many cruises say they are ‘geared’ to the adult traveler, but permit children. Viking’s guests are adults 18 and over ONLY.

First we’ll look at that they don’t have.

NO Children under 18 – this means no baby screams, no small ones running around, no need to check on the kids.

NO Casino – There are just as many people who don’t enjoy gambling as those who do. For the ones who don’t want to gamble, not having a casino will not be a problem. But, if it is a problem, this is not for them.

NO Inside Stateroom All of the staterooms on Viking Ocean ships are outside and all have private verandas.

NO Specialty dining rooms with extra charges.

Here’s what they do have:

A design that is modern and low key.

Destination-rich itineraries – Viking’s extended time in ports of call allows you to immerse yourself into the culture and history of the destination. That’s because Viking is about cultural immersion! Many of the itineraries begin with an overnight in the departure city to give passengers time to enjoy and explore that city.

Special lecturers on the ports visited and a variety of other topics.

Included shore excursions.

A ‘living room’ that allows for groupings of friends to relax, but you will not feel like everyone on the ship is there with you. Because the groupings are divided by walls and furniture to give a look and feel of private space.

Free WiFi!

A variety of different dining venues – including The Chef’s Table, The Kitchen Table, Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant, The Restaurant and the World Café.

Scandinavian influences are shown through a visit to the Spa. One very cool feature, pun intended, is the Snow Grotto. Snow gently falls from the ceiling as you stay as long as you desire, and then follow up with a visit to the sauna to warm up.

A guest count of 930 passengers.

One very interesting design feature of the Sky is the reproduced sections of the Bayeux Tapestry found in the stairwells and around the ship. The Bayeux Tapestry tells the story of the events leading up to the Norman Invasion. A video of the Bayeux Tapestry is also on display in the Viking Heritage museum on the Viking Sky. A fitting design element for a Norwegian cruise line.

A music venue reminiscent of a jazz club.

This is simply a sampling of what you can enjoy on a Viking Ocean Cruise. After touring the Viking Sky, I will be looking for the opportunity to cruise on her or one of her sister ships myself.
