Seven years ago, I co-hosted an exclusive Virtuoso sailing through the Panama Canal over the holidays on Silversea Cruises. This special sailing for Virtuoso members included a one-of-a-kind shore excursion in colorful Cartagena, Columbia.
Virtuoso offers unique amenities on partner cruise lines for guests booking through affiliated agencies. This was one of the sailings during the festive time. We hosted a private cocktail reception to meet our Virtuoso Guests. We also had a carefully curated tour showcasing the best of Cartagena’s rich history and beauty.
Our day began in Cartagena, olumbia, where we explored the magnificent colonial defensive walls of the San Felipe de Barajas Castle. We then strolled the lovely cobbled streets of the old town, taking in the vibrant architecture from stucco balconies blossoming with flowers. Our guide led us through the emerald factory and showroom to glimpse the city’s key industry firsthand.
A sobering stop at the Columbia Museum of the Inquisition revealed darker times under tribunal rule. The well-preserved torture devices were a reminder of the favored status long denied to many citizens.
We ended the evening at Club de Pesca restaurant, dining al fresco above the harbor. We sipped cocktails while watching the lights flicker on as dusk fell. This jewel of a city utterly captivated me.
