Summer is the high season for visiting London. Lots of visitors, lots to do, and many things that happen at a specific time. Things like the Changing of the Guard. Come late and you’ll miss it. Even if you arrive early you might see it over a lot of heads. Will you know what is going on?
On my latest visit to London I took the time to catch a little of the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham and it seemed ho-hum to me, because I couldn’t see everything. It just seemed the wrong way to do it. But there is a right way to see the Changing of the Guard.
There is a way to see it where you will see everything! The Changing the Guard London Walking Tour with Fun London Tours is the way to see the ‘pomp, ceremony, music and marching’ of the changing guard from all three locations. You read that right, there are three different areas involved in changing the guard at Buckingham Palace: St. James Palace, Buckingham Palace and Wellington Barracks. Bet you didn’t know that. Most people only see it from the Buckingham Palace point of view.
The Changing of the Guard includes the St. James Palace detachment of the Old Guard, the Buckingham Palace detachment of the Old Guard and the New Guard. It’s much more involved than you can imagine.
Your guide will lead you along this route, at one point you’ll even march alongside the guard, and will share fascinating facts and move you along so that you are ahead of the crowd. This is a fast-paced walk, and it’s not for those who have difficulty walking. The walking tour begins at 10:10 AM and by the time you are finished at 12:15 PM, you will have seen the entire event from start to finish.
