Entry/Exit System – What You Need to Know

On October 12, 2025, the European Union began gradually rolling out the Entry/Exit System (EES) at external borders. Full implementation is expected by April 10, 2026. This new digital border management tool will change the way travelers from outside the EU enter and exit the Schengen Area.

However, there is nothing you need to do in advance. You will follow the Customs and Immigration directions at the first border you cross, usually at your arrival airport or seaport.  

As a result, this new system will add some time to your entry process on your next visit to Europe. Still, ultimately, it will reduce your time in Customs and Immigration.  

Purpose of the Entry/Exit System

The EES aims to enhance security and improve travel efficiency by replacing traditional passport stamping with biometric data collection. It will assist authorities in quickly identifying overstays and preventing identity fraud, making Europe’s borders safer and more efficient for everyone.

What the EES Will Do

• Collect facial images and fingerprints from non-EU travelers upon entry and exit.  

• Store travel data electronically, replacing manual passport stamps.  

• Enable faster, more accurate border checks by authorities.

What Travelers Will Need to Do

• During your first crossing after October 12, 2025, be prepared to provide your biometric data (photo and fingerprints) at the border.

• Arrive early at border checkpoints initially, as processing times may be longer.  

• Keep your passport handy for scanning.  

Costs for Travelers

The EES biometric data collection will cost you nothing. However, looking ahead:

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026, once the EES is fully operational. ETIAS will require non-EU visitors to apply for travel authorization online before arriving, with a modest fee of €7 per application.
