Have you always wanted to explore the banks of the Mississippi River? If you answered yes, then a Mississippi River Cruise must be at the top of your travel bucket list. A cruise on the Mississippi River is an excellent option if you are looking to travel yet stay close to home. While there are so many destinations to explore during these river cruises, I know you will fall in love with Nottoway Plantation.
The Nottoway Plantation is one of the many ports of call you will make on your Mississippi river cruise between the destinations of New Orleans and Memphis. John Hampden purchased this plantation back in 1841. However, he didn’t build the house until 1858. But once Randolph completed it, the plantation house was considered one of the biggest antebellum plantation houses.
You can see this magnificent Antebellum mansion from the river since it only sits 200 feet behind the Mississippi River Levee. But you’ll need to look carefully because the surrounding oak trees, magnolias, and pecan trees do their best to obscure this gorgeous destination.
The Nottoway Plantation is a massive home; in fact it’s 53,000 square feet. Seven staircase lead to 64 rooms and five unique galleries. Enjoy seeing rooms decorated with Corinthian columns, mantles carved from marble, and lace curtains. But, of course, the all-time favorite room is the White Ballroom. That isn’t to say it will be your favorite, though. You will have the fun of deciding on your own what you like best.
The plantation grounds consist of current buildings that include offices, a carriage house, and nine cottages designed to look like the original housing quarters. But, unfortunately, the expansive gardens that were a highlight of the property no longer exists. That doesn’t mean you won’t spot a few 200-year-old oak trees during your visit, though!
Finally, you’ll want to take a walk to the north of the house to see the cemetery. Their final resting place after being re-interred back in 2003.
